History of the Düren District
The Düren district you see today was formed in 1972. This happened when two older districts, Jülich and Düren, decided to join together.
How the Districts Began
Both the old Jülich and Düren districts have a long history. They were first created way back in 1816. This was when the new Prussian province of Rhineland was established. These districts helped organize the region.
Understanding the Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for the Düren district tells a story about its past.
- The top part shows a lion. This lion comes from the city of Jülich, which is an important part of the district.
- The bottom part has a paper roll with the capital letter D. This letter stands for Düren. It also represents the paper industry, which has been very important in the area for a long time.
This special coat of arms was first given to the district in 1942. It was then confirmed again in 1972 when the two districts merged.
