Early Settlers and Township Creation

The first people to settle in this area were the Rolfe family in 1836. Just two years later, on March 6, 1838, the Michigan government officially created Vevay Township. It was formed from a part of Aurelius Township. The township got its name from a town called Vevay, Indiana.

The city of Mason used to be part of Vevay Township. This was true until 1875, when Mason became its own city. Since then, Mason has grown and taken over some parts of Vevay Township.

Railroads and Community Buildings

A railway line was built through the township starting in 1844. This line was part of the Jackson, Lansing and Saginaw Railroad. There were two train stations in the township: one at Mason Centre and another at Eden.

The Eden post office opened in 1843. It served the community for many years before closing in 1971. The first building for the township government was made of wood around 1890. The current township hall, where local meetings are held, opened in 1978.
