Columbus is a community in Mansfield Township, which is located in Burlington County, New Jersey. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a recognized place, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger Mansfield Township.
The area uses the United States Postal Service ZIP Code 08022. Many of Mansfield Township's government offices are found in or near Columbus. It's also the main place for businesses in the township. You'll find many shops and services along the main roads here.
Columbus is located where two important roads meet: County Route 543 (which goes east and west) and U.S. Route 206 (US 206). US 206 is a major highway that travels north and south. In the late 1950s or early 1960s, a new, faster road was built around the center of Columbus for US 206. The old road through town became a county road.
According to the 2010 United States Census, about 8,783 people lived in the area covered by ZIP Code 08022.
History of Columbus
This area was first settled a long time ago, in the 1700s. There was a famous place called the Black Horse Tavern here. Because of the tavern, the community was first known as Black Horse.
In 1795, people voted to decide where the main government offices for Burlington County, called the county seat, should be. Black Horse was one of the top choices, but it narrowly lost to Mount Holly. Around 1827, the settlement was renamed Columbus. This new name honored Christopher Columbus, the explorer.
