Commerce was once a small village in southern Alberta, Canada. It was located in Lethbridge County, northwest of the city of Lethbridge. For a short time, between 1912 and 1913, it was known as the Village of Coalgate. This village no longer exists today.
The Story of Commerce
The community of Commerce began in 1912. It was created as a place for people to live. These people worked at the Chinook coal mine, which was located northwest of Lethbridge. On July 9, 1912, it officially became a village and was first named Coalgate.
The village changed its name to Commerce on December 17, 1913. This new name matched the name of its post office. In 1913, about 294 people lived in Commerce.
The Chinook coal mine closed down on January 25, 1924. When the mine closed, many people moved away from the village. The population dropped to about 100 people in 1924. By 1925, only about 50 people remained. Because so few people were left, the village officially closed on May 13, 1926.
