History of Commodore

How Commodore Was Founded

Commodore was started in 1919. It was created by the Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corporation. This company was part of the New York Central Railroad. The town was named after Cornelius Vanderbilt. He was a famous businessman who founded the railroad. People often called him "Commodore" because he used to own riverboats.

A Special "Model Town"

Commodore was planned as a "model town." This meant it had better homes for coal miners than other towns. The houses were built with strong concrete blocks, not wood. This was unusual for the time. Also, the homes had toilets and the town had a sewer system. These features were very rare in other mining communities nearby.

Street Names and Design

The streets in Commodore were named after important people from the coal company. For example, there were streets named after F.E. Herriman, John Fisher, and A.J. Musser. Paul Gill, an engineer for the coal company, designed the town and its first buildings.

Becoming a Historic Place

On August 26, 1994, Commodore became a National Historic District. This means it is a special area with important historical buildings. The district includes 94 buildings that help tell the story of the town.
