The Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia is a special group that helps people give money to good causes. It started on March 25, 1985, as the Gwinnett Foundation. Think of it like a savings account for charity!

This foundation helps individuals, businesses, and other non-profit groups manage their charitable money. Most of the money comes from "donor advised funds." This means people donate money and then suggest where they want it to go. The foundation puts these funds together to invest them wisely. Then, they use the money earned to give out grants. Grants are like gifts of money given to different charities to help them do good work.

How It Started

The Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia was created to collect and give out money for charity. Its main goal was to make life better for everyone in Gwinnett County.

After raising some starting money, the foundation got a big boost in 1987. This was thanks to Robert D. Fowler and the owners of the Gwinnett Daily News. They offered a huge challenge: they would give $1 million if the community could match it. The community successfully raised the matching funds!

In March 2002, the board of directors decided to change the name. They became the Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia. This change showed that they were helping more than just Gwinnett County. Their work now reached other areas like Barrow, North Fulton, Forsyth, Clarke, Jackson, Madison, Greene, Oconee, and Walton counties.

Making a Difference

Since 1985, the Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia and its donors have given over $52 million back to the community. This money helps many different programs and organizations.

For example, in 2012-2013, the foundation received more than $5.5 million in donations. In the same period, they gave out over $6 million in grants. The total money they manage has grown to more than $1.1 million. This shows how much good they do for the people in Northeast Georgia.
