Compeer is a small community known as a hamlet in east-central Alberta, Canada. It is located within a special region called Special Area No. 4. A hamlet is a very small settlement, often smaller than a village.
Compeer used to be an official village. However, it stopped being a village on December 31, 1936. After that, it became part of a larger area known as the Municipal District of Neutral Hills No. 331.
Where is Compeer?
Compeer is found on an old railway track that is no longer used. This track once belonged to the Railink Central Western railway.
The hamlet is located north of Highway 12. It is also west of the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan. Compeer is about 14 kilometers (9 miles) east of another community called Altario.
The Story of Compeer's Name
Compeer was founded in 1901. Before that, it was a popular spot where Aboriginal people would set up their camps. The name "Compeer" actually comes from a misunderstanding.
When early explorers arrived in the area, the native people told them to "camp here." The explorers thought this phrase was the name of the place. So, they started calling the area "Compeer." It literally means "camp here."
How Many People Live There?
Compeer is a very small community. In the 1991 Census of Population, Statistics Canada counted the number of people living there. The population of Compeer was 21 people at that time.
