Concepción is a small town in the Sololá region of Guatemala. It is a special place because everyone living there is a native person. This means their families have lived in this area for a very long time.

History of Concepción

Spanish Colony Era

We don't know the exact date when Concepción was founded. However, old papers from the time when Spain ruled Guatemala show it had different names. It was once called "Concepción Quechelaj" and "Concepción Paquixalá." The word "Quechelaj" comes from the Kakchikel language. It means "River of thorns."

After the Spanish conquest of Guatemala, the town was renamed "Nuestra Señora de La Concepción." This name honored "Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception." But the town's name changed several times after that.

During the Spanish rule, Concepción was part of the Tecpán Atitlán district. Later, it became part of the larger Sololá area. In 1770, an important church leader, Archbishop Pedro Cortés y Larraz, called the town "Concepción Kixalá." At that time, it was part of the San Francisco Panajachel church area.

After Guatemala Became Independent

Guatemala became independent from Spain. In 1892, official records showed Concepción as a town within the Sololá Department. It has been known as a municipality of Sololá ever since.

Climate

Concepción has a mild climate. This means it's not too hot and not too cold. It has what is called a "temperate climate" or Cwb in the Köppen system. This type of climate usually has warm, wet summers and cool, dry winters.

Where is Concepción?

The main town of Concepción is about 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) from Sololá. It is also about 146 kilometers (about 90 miles) from Guatemala City, which is the capital of Guatemala.
