Concord Pacific Place facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Concord Pacific Place is a very large, specially designed neighborhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It's located right on the north side of False Creek, a body of water in the city. This huge community is known as "Canada's biggest master-planned urban community." When it's fully finished, it's expected to be the largest in North America based on how many people live there and its total size.

What is Concord Pacific Place?

Concord Pacific Place is a modern, planned community. This means it was designed from scratch, not built little by little over time. It includes many homes, parks, and businesses. The goal was to create a complete living area for thousands of people.

How Did It Start?

Before Concord Pacific Place was built, the land had a different purpose. It used to be the rail yards for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Rail yards are big areas where trains are stored and maintained.

In 1986, this land was transformed for a huge event called Expo '86. This was a World Exposition, like a big international fair. After Expo '86, the land was ready for a new future.

Who Built This Big Community?

In 1988, a company called Concord Pacific Developments bought the land. They had investors, including a very wealthy person from Hong Kong named Li Ka-shing. They started to build the community we see today.

Over the years, Vancouver grew a lot. More ships came to the port, and the city's economy was strong. Many people also moved to Vancouver, especially from Asia. All these things helped Concord Pacific Place grow. The city also hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, which brought more attention and development to Vancouver.

How Big Is It?

Concord Pacific Place is truly massive. Estimates vary, but it's a huge project. Some say it cost about $2 billion and covers over 200 acres. This area could have around 8,000 homes. Other estimates suggest it's a $4 billion project, home to more than 20,000 people. It could eventually have about 50 buildings with 10,000 homes. No matter the exact numbers, it's one of the largest urban developments around!

What About Its Future?

In 2010, a city leader named Geoff Meggs spoke about the project. He said that the Vancouver City Council would not pressure Concord Pacific Developments to build on the land faster. This means the development continues at its own pace, shaping a significant part of Vancouver's waterfront.
