The confusing rocket frog (Ectopoglossus confusus) is a small frog that belongs to the Dendrobatidae family, also known as poison dart frogs. Even though it's called a "rocket frog," it doesn't actually fly! This special frog lives only in a small area in Ecuador, South America, specifically in rocky streams on the western side of the Andes mountains.

Sadly, the number of confusing rocket frogs is going down very quickly. This is mainly because of copper mining in the areas where they live. People are working to protect this unique frog and its home.

About the Confusing Rocket Frog

The confusing rocket frog is a type of amphibian, which means it can live both in water and on land. It is part of the Dendrobatidae family, which includes many colorful frogs often called "poison dart frogs." However, not all frogs in this family are poisonous.

Where Does It Live?

This frog is endemic to a very specific place. This means it can only be found there and nowhere else in the world! Its home is in Rio Junin, located in the Imbabura Province of Ecuador. It prefers to live near rocky streams in what is called a "lower montane rainforest." This type of forest is found on the lower slopes of mountains and gets a lot of rain.

Part of its home is inside the Reserva Ecológica Los Ilinizas. This is a protected area, but there aren't specific plans just for the confusing rocket frog within the reserve.

Why Is It Confusing?

The name "confusing rocket frog" might make you wonder why it's called that! The "confusing" part of its name (confusus) was given by the scientists who first described it in 2009. Sometimes, animals are named based on how they look, where they live, or even if they were hard to identify at first.

Threats and Conservation

The biggest danger to the confusing rocket frog is copper mining. Mining activities can destroy the frog's habitat by polluting the water and changing the landscape. This makes it very hard for the frogs to survive and reproduce. Because of this, the frog's population is shrinking fast.

What Efforts Are Being Made?

Many people and groups are trying to help the confusing rocket frog. They are working to protect this frog and other animals in the region from the harmful effects of mining. There are also movements to ask the government of Ecuador to stop allowing mining in these important natural areas. Protecting the frog's home is key to its survival.
