How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
The history of Consejo is connected to the history of Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
The First Census in Consejo
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This was like a big survey to find out how many people lived where.
