A Look Back: The History of Jaguas
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the combined population of the Consejo and Jaguas areas was 1,162 people.
