History of Consejo
Consejo has an interesting history. After the Spanish–American War, which was a conflict between Spain and the United States, Puerto Rico was given to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Becoming a U.S. Territory
In 1899, Puerto Rico officially became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it belongs to the U.S. but is not a state and does not have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Count
Soon after, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in a place. In 1899, the census found that 929 people lived in Consejo barrio.
