Constance Jenkins Macky (born Constance Lillian Jenkins; 1883–1961) was a talented artist and teacher. She was born in Australia but later became an American citizen. Constance was famous for her beautiful paintings of people (portraits), outdoor scenes (landscapes), and everyday objects (still life).

Early Life and Art Training

Constance Lillian Jenkins was born on June 29, 1883. Her birthplace was Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Her parents were Emma Wright and John S. Jenkins. Constance was the youngest of six children.

She started studying art seriously when she was 15 years old. From 1900 to 1908, she went to the National Gallery of Victoria Art School. This school was in Australia. In 1909, she traveled to Paris, France. There, she studied at the Académie Julian, a famous art school.

Marriage and Family Life

In 1912, Constance Jenkins married Eric Spencer Macky. Their wedding took place in Berkeley, California. Eric Macky was also an artist. They had two sons together. One of their sons, Donald Spencer Macky (1913–2007), also became an artist.

In 1915, Constance and Eric both showed their artwork. They created decorative panels for the Australian and New Zealand Buildings. This was part of the Panama–Pacific International Exposition. This big event was held in San Francisco.

Founding an Art School

In 1916, Constance Jenkins Macky and her husband opened their own art school. They called it the Spencer Macky Art School. It was located in San Francisco. Many other famous artists had studios in the same building.

The school quickly became popular. It moved to a bigger space called the "Artists Building." In 1917, their school joined with another one. It became part of the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA). Today, this school is known as the San Francisco Art Institute. Constance continued to teach art classes there.

She was also a member of important art groups. These included the San Francisco Art Association and the California Society of Women Artists.

Later Life and Legacy

Constance Jenkins Macky passed away on November 17, 1961. She died in San Francisco, California. She is buried in the Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito, California.

Her artwork is still kept in public collections today. You can find her paintings in places like the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia. Her work is also at the National Library of Australia and other galleries.
