Discovering Conway's Past

The area where Conway is now was first settled around 1800. An Irish soldier named John McKee, who fought in the American Revolutionary War, received 800 acres of land here. Before that, Native American tribes called this area Crow's Run Valley. They saw many crows nesting in the tall Hemlock trees. McKee's land stretched about 2 miles from the Ohio River into the forest.

In 1825, McKee sold 230 acres of his land to Michael Conway, who was also an Irish American. McKee used this money to help build the first railroad between Pittsburgh and Beaver County. This railroad later became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The famous Conway Yard was built in 1884. It was expanded a lot in the early 1900s and again in the 1950s. These expansions made it the largest train yard in the world for many years. Besides the railroad, other businesses grew in Conway. People worked with clay, coal, oil, and made bricks. They also helped build more railroads.

A post office, first called Agnew, opened in 1881. Conway officially became a borough on June 3, 1902. Addru Bepler was the first mayor of the town.
