Life and Career
Vanice Palmer was born on August 5, 1993, in Irvington, New Jersey. Her parents were both DJs who often played Chicago house music. Growing up, she went to a Catholic school and sang in choirs. When she was 12, she started writing poetry and performing her poems with background music. In 2011, she began creating her own music.
Before her music career took off, Palmer worked several jobs, including as a delivery driver for DoorDash and Uber Eats. She went through some hard times and even worked as a live-in caregiver while living out of her car.
She first used the stage name Harajuku Cookiee, then changed it to Cookiee Kawa, and finally settled on Cookiee Kawaii. The name was inspired by her love for cookies and Japanese anime. She released her first project, Zen, in 2016. In 2019, she released her first mixtape, Club Soda, Vol. 1.
In February 2020, her song "Vibe (If I Back It Up)" became very popular on TikTok, even though it was first released in 2019. Magazines like Noisey and Vulture called it one of the best songs of 2020.
In March 2020, she signed with the record label Empire. In August of that year, she released her second mixtape, Club Soda, Vol. 2, which included "Vibe." She released an animated music video for "Vibe" in May 2020, followed by a live-action video and a remix featuring rapper Tyga in August 2020.
In 2021, she released the single "Relax Your Mind." Her first full album, Vanice, came out on July 30, 2021. It was introduced by the single "Press Play (Gamer Girl)."
Musical Style
Cookiee Kawaii's music is mostly known as Jersey club, a type of dance music. When she first started, she made more R&B music. She began making Jersey club music after a suggestion from DJ Jayhood, and they created her first Jersey club song together.
Her music has been described as "high-energy and made for partying." One of her biggest musical influences is the artist Missy Elliott.
Personal Life
Before signing her record deal, Cookiee Kawaii was studying business and marketing at Essex County College. As of 2020, she lives in East Orange, New Jersey.
