DoorDash, Inc. is an American company that helps people order food and other items online. They also deliver these items right to your door. DoorDash is the biggest food delivery platform in the United States. It handles more than half of all food deliveries there.

The company also delivers many convenience store items. DoorDash was started by Tony Xu, Andy Fang, and Stanley Tang. In 2024, it joined the Fortune 500 list, which includes the largest companies in the U.S. DoorDash and its European partner, Wolt, operate in 32 countries around the world.

How DoorDash Started

In January 2013, three students from Stanford University – Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, and Andy Fang – launched a service called PaloAltoDelivery.com. This was in Palo Alto, California. In the summer of 2013, they received $120,000 to help start their business. This money came from a company called Y Combinator.

The company officially became DoorDash in June 2013. By December 2018, DoorDash became the second-largest food delivery service in the U.S. It was just behind GrubHub. By March 2019, DoorDash had grown even more. It became the largest food delivery provider in the United States.

In October 2019, DoorDash opened its first "ghost kitchen." This is a kitchen space used only for making food for delivery, not for customers to eat inside. It was called DoorDash Kitchen and had four restaurants working there.

By June 2020, DoorDash had raised over $2.5 billion from many investors. These investors included Sequoia Capital and SoftBank Group. In November 2020, DoorDash opened its first physical restaurant location. It partnered with a Bay Area restaurant called Burma Bites. This location offered both delivery and pick-up orders.

On December 9, 2020, DoorDash became a public company. This means its shares can be bought and sold on the stock market. They raised $3.37 billion when they first offered their shares.

In August 2022, DoorDash ended its partnership with Walmart. They had been working together since 2018. In late November 2022, DoorDash announced it would reduce its corporate staff. About 1,250 employees were affected. This was done to help control the company's costs.

In June 2023, DoorDash gave its drivers a new choice. Drivers could choose to earn an hourly minimum wage. This was instead of being paid per delivery. However, drivers only earned this hourly wage when they were actively making a delivery.

In September 2023, DoorDash moved its stock listing. It moved from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq. On December 18, 2023, DoorDash was added to the Nasdaq-100 index. This index includes 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq.

In March 2025, DoorDash announced a partnership with Klarna. Klarna is a service that lets customers pay for things over time. This means customers could schedule small payments for their DoorDash orders.

In May 2025, DoorDash acquired the UK-based delivery service Deliveroo. This deal was worth $3.9 billion. The combined company now operates in 40 countries. It serves 50 million users every month. Also in May 2025, DoorDash acquired SevenRooms. This company helps restaurants manage bookings.

Where DoorDash Operates

DoorDash started expanding to other countries in 2015. Its first international launch was in Toronto, Canada. The company began operating outside North America in 2019. It officially launched in Melbourne, Australia, in September. Later, it expanded to more places in Australia.

In 2021, DoorDash expanded its service area to Sendai, Japan, in June. It also launched in Stuttgart, Germany, in November. In June 2022, the company expanded into the Wellington Region of New Zealand.

The company also added new services in 2020. It started offering grocery delivery. This began in California and the Midwest in August 2020. In 2021, DoorDash added a service called DoubleDash. This allows customers to order from more than one store at a time. It also started delivering alcohol in 20 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., Canada, and Australia.

Companies DoorDash Has Bought

DoorDash has bought several other companies to grow its business.

  • In August 2019, it acquired Scotty Labs. This company works on technology for self-driving and remote-controlled vehicles.
  • In October 2019, DoorDash bought Caviar for $410 million. Caviar is a service that delivers food from fancier restaurants. These restaurants often do not offer their own delivery.
  • On February 8, 2021, DoorDash announced it bought Chowbotics. This robotics company is known for its robot that makes salads.
  • On November 9, 2021, DoorDash acquired the Finnish technology company Wolt. This deal was worth over $8.1 billion.
  • In May 2025, DoorDash acquired Deliveroo, a food delivery company from the UK. This purchase was for $3.9 billion.
  • Also in May 2025, DoorDash bought SevenRooms for $1.2 billion. SevenRooms is a platform that helps restaurants manage their bookings.

Helping Communities

DoorDash also works to help communities.

  • In 2018, DoorDash started Project DASH. This program partners with local groups that help people get enough food. They deliver food donations to those who need them. By August 2019, the program was in 25 cities. It had delivered over one million pounds of food. As of September 2021, Project DASH was in over 900 cities. It had delivered more than 15 million meals.
  • DoorDash partnered with the National Urban League in 2020. This was part of its Main Street Strong program. They promised $200 million over five years to support restaurants and drivers. This was especially helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • In 2022, DoorDash partnered with Meals on Wheels. This partnership helps deliver food to senior citizens.
