Cooks is a small, unincorporated community in Michigan, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with people living there, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Cooks is located in Schoolcraft County. Specifically, it's found within Inwood Township. You can find it along the Canadian National Railway, just north of U.S. Route 2. It's about 11.5 miles (18.5 km) west-southwest of a larger town called Manistique. Cooks even has its own post office with the ZIP code 49817.

Discovering the Past: The History of Cooks

Cooks began its story in the year 1883. That's when a man named John C. Cook decided to build a sawmill in this area. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber, which is wood used for building.

How Cooks Got Its Name

Because of John C. Cook's sawmill, the community was first called Cook's Mills. Later, the name was shortened to just Cooks. This is how many places get their names, often from important people or features.

Early Services: The Post Office and Railroad

A post office opened in Cooks on June 28, 1888. This was an important step for the community. It meant people could send and receive mail more easily. Norman McDonald was the very first postmaster, the person in charge of the post office.

The community also had a station on the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad. This train station was known as Cooks Mill. Having a train station was a big deal. It helped people travel and moved goods in and out of the community.
