It was named by an executive from Steuben County, New York. That county was named after Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. He was an important inspector for George Washington's army from 1777 to 1784. Steuben was also a stop on the Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad. Its post office opened in 1903.
