Copan is a small town in Washington County, Oklahoma, United States. In 2020, about 710 people lived there. The town's population has changed over the years. It was 733 people in 2010 and 796 people in 2000.

History of Copan
Copan started as a railway stop in 1899. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway built a station and named it Copan. This name came from a city called Copán, Honduras.
- In 1900, a post office opened, but it was called Lawton.
- In 1901, the settlement was renamed Weldon.
- By 1904, it was called Copan again.
- The town officially became a town in 1906.
- The Copan school district also started in 1906.
- By 1907, 305 people lived in Copan.
Oil Industry Growth
The discovery of oil nearby helped Copan grow a lot.
- In 1904, the Prairie Oil and Gas Company built Oklahoma's first big oil pipeline. This pipeline went from Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Humboldt, Kansas.
- They also built a large oil storage area near Copan. It had 107 tanks that could hold a lot of crude oil.
- The Copan oil field was found in 1907. By 1915, it had almost 2,200 wells producing oil.
Surviving and Growing
Copan faced challenges like big fires in 1906, 1911, and 1912, but the town recovered.
- The town grew more after Lake Hulah was created in 1951.
- Lake Copan was created later in 1983.
- These lakes brought more tourists, and the population reached its highest point of 960 people in 1980.
- Today, Copan's economy mostly depends on travel and fun activities around the lakes.
