Discovering Copeville
Copeville is located in the Murray and Mallee region of South Australia. This area is known for its unique landscapes. It's a place where you can see how towns can change over time.
A Look Back: Copeville's History
Copeville was officially established as a town on May 1, 1919. It grew up around the Waikerie railway line. Railways were very important back then for moving goods and people. The town was a busy spot because of the train station.
However, the railway line was closed in 1994. This change had a big impact on Copeville. Since the railway closed, the town has become much smaller.
What's it Like Today?
Even though the railway is gone, you can still see signs of its past. Large buildings called bulk grain silos are still at the old railway station. These silos were used to store grain from local farms. They don't operate every year now, but they are a reminder of Copeville's farming history.
There was also a Methodist church in Copeville. It was an important part of the community for many years. In 1966, this church joined the Karoonda church circuit, which means it became part of a larger group of churches.
People and Government
According to the 2016 Australian census, which counted people in August 2016, Copeville had a population of 34 people. This shows how small the community is today.
Copeville is part of several government areas. For federal elections, it's in the Barker division. For state elections in South Australia, it's in the Hammond district. Locally, it's looked after by the District Council of Karoonda East Murray. These different levels of government help manage services and rules for the area.
