Perponda is a small town and a special area (called a locality) in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located about 111 kilometers (that's about 69 miles) east of Adelaide, which is the capital city of South Australia.
History of Perponda
Early Beginnings
The town of Perponda was officially planned and marked out in 1919. Its name comes from a word used by the local Aboriginal people, which means "the plains." This tells us a bit about the flat land around the area.
Railway and School
Perponda used to be a stop on the Waikerie railway line. This railway line was important for connecting towns and moving goods. However, the railway line closed down in 1994.
A school was opened in Perponda in 1924, giving local children a place to learn. Like the railway, the school has also closed its doors since then.
Modern Locality
Today, the area known as Perponda also includes a place that was once a separate town called Kalyan. Kalyan was the next stop north along the old railway line from Perponda.
