About the Coqui Francolin
The Coqui francolin is a type of bird. It is part of a group called francolins. These birds usually live on the ground. They are often hard to spot because they blend in with their surroundings.
What's in a Name?
Scientists group living things into different families. The Coqui francolin was once in the Peliperdix group. But in 2020, new studies showed it belonged to a different group. This new group is called Campocolinus. The International Ornithologists' Union agreed with this change. So now, the Coqui francolin is officially Campocolinus coqui.
Where Do They Live?
Coqui francolins live mostly in the southern half of Africa. You can also find them in some parts of western Sahel and Ethiopia. Many people believe it is the most common francolin bird in all of Africa.
Their Home Environment
These birds love open spaces. They mainly live in grasslands, steppes, and savannas. They also like dry scrubland. Sometimes, you can find them in bright forests or even grain fields. They can live high up on plateaus, sometimes as high as 2,000 meters (about 6,500 feet). Coqui francolins usually stay in the same area their whole lives. They do not often migrate.
