A Glimpse into Corcovado's Past
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, after a big conflict called the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of an agreement known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a special kind of area connected to the U.S., called an unincorporated territory.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government wanted to know how many people lived in different parts of Puerto Rico. They did a count, like a big survey, called a census. This census showed that 1,065 people lived in the Corcovado barrio at that time.
