Cordelia Slough facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cordelia Slough is a natural waterway, about 17.4 kilometers (10.8 miles) long, located in Solano County, California. It's like a small river that connects to Suisun Slough, which then flows into Grizzly Bay. Cordelia Slough is fed by smaller streams like Green Valley Creek and Red Top Creek. This area is a very important home for many different kinds of water plants and animals. For example, a special type of steelhead trout travels up Cordelia Slough to lay its eggs in the smaller streams that feed it.

Home to Special Animals

Cordelia Slough is known for having a wide variety of living things, which is called biodiversity. It's also a special place because it's home to some endangered species. These are animals that are at risk of disappearing forever. Two important endangered animals found here are the Sacramento splittail, a unique fish, and the Salt marsh harvest mouse, a small mouse that lives in marshy areas. Protecting these animals is very important.

Keeping the Water Clean

The areas around Cordelia Slough are seeing more and more people moving in, especially from the nearby San Francisco Bay Area. As more homes and buildings are built, there's a greater chance that the water in the slough could get dirty. This can happen because of "surface runoff" – which is rainwater that flows over streets and yards, picking up pollution before it reaches the slough. Keeping the water clean is important for all the plants and animals that live there. Cordelia Slough is part of the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, which is a special place set aside by California to protect wildlife.
