Cordillera Oriental (Peru) facts for kids
The Cordillera Oriental (which means "Eastern Mountain Range" in Spanish) is a huge chain of mountains located in the eastern part of Peru. It's a major section of the famous Andes mountains, which are the longest mountain range in the world!
This mountain range is made up of very old rocks that have changed a lot over millions of years due to heat and pressure deep inside the Earth. Think of it like clay being baked into a hard brick – but on a much, much bigger scale!
The Cordillera Oriental includes many smaller mountain chains within it. Some of these are the Vilcanota, Vilcabamba, Urubamba, and Carabaya ranges. These areas are home to many tall peaks, with some reaching over 6,000 meters (about 20,000 feet) high! One well-known peak is Salcantay.
The very highest point in the Cordillera Oriental is a majestic peak called Nevado Ausangate. It stands incredibly tall at 6,372 meters (20,905 feet) above sea level, often covered in snow and ice.
