History of Corinth

How Corinth Began

The story of Corinth started in the late 1820s. This is when the Corinth Christian Church was founded. The town likely got its name from this church.

The post office opened much later, in 1868. In 1871, the church moved to a new spot. A new church building was finished in 1874. It replaced the older log church.

Becoming a City

Before 1876, much of Corinth was in Owen County. But in 1876, it became part of Grant County.

In 1878, Corinth officially became a city. The Kentucky State Legislature made this happen. They also started the Corinth Academy that same year.

Challenges and Triumphs

Corinth has faced several big fires over the years. The first fire happened in 1890. A passing train's boiler water helped save some buildings. More large fires occurred in 1904 and 1914.

In 1930, the Corinth basketball team achieved something amazing. They won both the state and national championships!

Another major fire in 1933 destroyed much of the downtown area. Firefighters from other towns helped put it out. A big problem was the lack of water. To fix this, the Corinth Water District was created in 1986. In 1995, the city got help to build a water treatment plant.
