Williamstown is a city in Kentucky, located in Grant and Pendleton counties. It's known as a "home-rule-class city," which means it has the power to govern itself in many ways. In 2020, about 3,894 people lived there. Williamstown is also the main town, or county seat, of Grant County.

History of Williamstown

When Grant County was created in 1820, a man named William Arnold offered his land for the county's main town. Arnold had fought in the American Revolutionary War and moved to the area in 1795. The town built on his land was named after him when it officially became a city in 1825.

The town grew slowly at first. By 1870, only 281 people lived there. Things started to change when the Cincinnati Southern Railway was built through the county in 1877. Later, in 1957, Williamstown Lake was created, which is a big reservoir. In the 1960s, Interstate 75, a major highway, was built, making it easier to travel to and from Williamstown.

A big change happened in 2016 when the Ark Encounter theme park opened in Williamstown. This park features a huge, life-sized replica of Noah's Ark.

Where is Williamstown?

Williamstown is located in the eastern part of Grant County. To its north is the city of Dry Ridge. The city's borders even stretch a little into Pendleton County.

Interstate 75 runs along the west side of Williamstown. This highway makes it easy to get to bigger cities: Cincinnati is about 37 miles north, and Lexington is about 45 miles south. U.S. Route 25 also goes through the middle of Williamstown, where it's called Main Street. This road connects Williamstown to Crittenden to the north and Corinth to the south.

Williamstown covers a total area of about 17.23 square miles (44.64 square kilometers). Most of this is land, but about 0.53 square miles (1.37 square kilometers) is water. Williamstown Lake is a large lake in the northeast part of the city. It's a reservoir, which means it's a man-made lake used to store water.
