David "Corky" Calhoun (born November 1, 1950) is an American former professional basketball player. He played in the NBA from 1972 to 1980. Before joining the NBA, Calhoun played college basketball at the University of Pennsylvania. He was chosen as the 4th overall pick in the 1972 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns. Corky Calhoun is famous for winning an NBA Championship with the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1976–1977 season.
Basketball Career
College Years
Corky Calhoun played college basketball for the Penn Quakers at the University of Pennsylvania. He played in 84 games for the team. During his time, he averaged 12.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. His coach was Chuck Daly.
In his final year, 1972, Calhoun helped lead Penn to an amazing 25–3 record. They also made it to the East Regional Final of the NCAA tournament. This showed he was a very talented player.
NBA Journey
After college, Corky Calhoun was a top pick in the 1972 NBA draft. The Phoenix Suns chose him as the 4th player overall. He was also drafted by the Kentucky Colonels in the American Basketball Association (ABA) draft, but he chose to play in the NBA.
Calhoun played for the Phoenix Suns for three years. After that, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. In 1976, he joined the Portland Trail Blazers as a free agent. This was a great move because he became a key part of their team that won the NBA Championship in 1977!
After two successful seasons with the Blazers, Calhoun was traded to the Indiana Pacers. He played with the Pacers until the middle of the 1980 season when his time in the NBA came to an end.
Life After Basketball
After his NBA career, Corky Calhoun thought about playing basketball in France. However, he decided to take a job offer from Mobil Oil Corporation. This company is now known as Exxon Mobil. He worked there as a coordinator for fuel marketing in the U.S.
