Cornell Luther Dupree (born December 19, 1942 – died May 8, 2011) was an amazing American guitarist. He played both jazz and R&B music.
Cornell worked with many famous musicians like Aretha Franklin and Bill Withers. He even appeared on the TV show David Letterman. Cornell wrote a book about playing soul and blues guitar. People say he played on about 2,500 different recordings!

Cornell Dupree's Musical Journey

Cornell was born and grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. He went to I.M. Terrell High School there. He started his music career playing for Atlantic Records. He helped record albums for stars like Aretha Franklin and King Curtis. Cornell and King Curtis grew up together in Fort Worth.
He also played on recordings with other great musicians. These included Lena Horne, Gábor Szabó, Archie Shepp, and Miles Davis.
Forming the Band Stuff
Cornell was one of the first members of a band called Stuff. Other members included Eric Gale, Richard Tee, Steve Gadd, Chris Parker, and Gordon Edwards. Cornell and Richard Tee often recorded music together.
Cornell also played on Joe Cocker's albums Stingray and Luxury You Can Afford. He released his own solo albums too. Some of his solo albums were Teasin, Saturday Night Fever, and Child's Play. He played on Brook Benton's famous songs "Rainy Night in Georgia" and "Please Send Me Someone to Love".
Later Career and Health
The Yamaha company even made a special guitar named after Cornell Dupree. It was called the Cornell Dupree Model.
In 1989, Cornell made a video with Arlen Roth. It was called Mastering R&B Guitar. This video showed his unique playing style and techniques. In 2009, Cornell appeared in a movie called Still Bill. This movie was about the life of Bill Withers. In the film, Cornell played a guitar version of the song "Grandma's Hands". Bill Withers joined him on stage to sing. During this performance, Cornell played his guitar while using an oxygen machine. This showed he was suffering from a lung condition called emphysema.
Cornell Dupree passed away on May 8, 2011, at his home in Fort Worth, Texas. He had been waiting for a lung transplant because of his emphysema.
