Corona del Mar State Beach is a beautiful protected beach in California. Its name means "Crown of the Sea" in Spanish. This special beach is part of California's state park system. It is located in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach, and the city of Newport Beach helps manage it. The park covers about 30 acres (12 hectares) and was officially created in 1947.
A Look Back in Time
This beach was once a very popular spot for surfing. This was especially true until the late 1930s. Back then, a long wall called a jetty was built to extend the Newport Harbor. This changed the ocean waves.
The jetty helped create a famous surf break called The Wedge. However, it also blocked most of the big waves from reaching Corona del Mar State Beach. Now, only the largest waves from the south can reach this beach.
A Surfing Legend's Rescue
In 1925, something amazing happened at Corona del Mar beach. A famous surfer named Duke Kahanamoku used his surfboard to save people. A fishing boat had flipped over in the strong waves. Duke quickly used his board to rescue those in trouble. This was one of the first times a surfboard was used for a rescue!
