History of Correggio
Correggio has an interesting past. For a long time, it was a small principality, which means it was ruled by a prince or princess. One famous ruler was Veronica Gambara (1485–1550). She was a talented poet and a strong leader. Veronica took charge of the principality after her husband, Giberto X, died in 1518. She ruled for many years, until 1550.
Later, in 1659, Correggio became part of the Duchy of Modena. This was a larger area ruled by a duke.
