A Look Back at Cosnino's History
Early Days with the Railroad
By 1893, Cosnino became a stop along the Santa Fe railroad line. This kind of stop was called a "railroad siding." It meant trains could pull off the main track there. In October 1893, two trains had an accident east of Cosnino.
Cosnino also had a telegraph office. This office helped people send messages over long distances. However, it closed in 1913. Its services were then moved to nearby Winona, Arizona.
Community Life and the Schoolhouse
In the 1910s and 1920s, the Cosnino community had an active club. This club likely organized events for local residents.
A schoolhouse was built in Cosnino in 1924. It was a one-room school. The school was located about a mile from the main highway on Walnut Canyon Road. The Coconino Sun newspaper described it as "an ideal setting for a rural school." In 1926, the Cosnino school had 15 students.
The school had an interesting schedule. Because of heavy snow in the winter, the annual school break ran from November to March. This was different from most schools. The school building was also used for community meetings. People even suggested it could be a place for Sunday school. Many community events took place at the Cosnino schoolhouse. Later, the Cosnino school became part of the larger Flagstaff school system.
Cosnino in Recent Times
In 1960, the population of Cosnino was 15 people.
During the 1970s, the Cosnino Arena was a busy place. It was located on Cosnino Road. The arena hosted events for local communities, including 4-H activities. These events often focused on farming and animal care.
In 1976, there were plans for a new housing area. It was to be called Cosnino Equestrian Estates. This area was evacuated in 1988. This happened after a train derailed near Cosnino Road.
