The Costa de la Luz has a very long and interesting history. People have lived here for thousands of years, since about 1200 BCE.

At La Rábida Monastery, Christopher Columbus asked the Franciscan monks for help. He wanted to find support for his plan to sail across the Atlantic Ocean. The monks introduced Columbus to the wealthy Pinzón brothers, who were a local seafaring family. The Pinzóns helped convince Ferdinand and Isabella, the King and Queen of Spain, to support Columbus's voyage. With the royal family's help and the Pinzóns' collaboration, Columbus was able to get his three ships and local crews from the Huelva area. This led to his famous journey to the Americas.
