Coto is a small community, also known as a barrio, located in the town of Peñuelas, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,467 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States. Coto is known for its quiet charm and local life.
Coto's Past: A Glimpse into History
Coto has an interesting history, just like many places in Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From then on, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
A year later, in 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Coto and a nearby area called Encarnación had a combined population of 1,271 people.
