Charles Francis "Cotton" Nash (born July 24, 1942 – died May 23, 2023) was a talented American athlete. He played both professional basketball and professional baseball. He was a forward in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Los Angeles Lakers and San Francisco Warriors. He also played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) for the Kentucky Colonels. In baseball, he was an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins.

Cotton Nash's Early Life

Cotton Nash was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on July 24, 1942. His uncle gave him the nickname "Cotton-top" because he had very light, almost white, hair.

When Cotton was 11, his family moved to Indiana. That's where he started playing basketball. Later, his family moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana. He went to Lake Charles High School from 1958 to 1960.

Cotton Nash went to the University of Kentucky. He played college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team. He was an amazing player! He was chosen as an All-American three times. In 1964, he was even a first-team All-American. He also tried out for the 1964 Summer Olympics basketball team.

The Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) picked Nash in the 1964 NBA draft. He played for the Lakers for a short time. Then, the San Francisco Warriors picked him up.

Nash later played in the American Basketball Association (ABA). He joined the Kentucky Colonels during the 1967–68 season. He averaged 8.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game for the Colonels.

Cotton Nash's Baseball Career

While at the University of Kentucky, Cotton Nash also played on the Kentucky baseball team. In 1963, he played summer baseball for the Cotuit Kettleers. He was named a league all-star that year.

In May 1964, Nash signed with the Los Angeles Angels. He started his professional baseball career with the Hawaii Islanders. In August 1967, the Angels traded Nash to the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox then brought him up to the major leagues on September 1.

In 1969, the White Sox traded Nash to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played for a minor league team called the Columbus Jets. Later, the White Sox traded him to the Minnesota Twins. Nash played for the Twins in the major leagues in September 1969. He also played for their minor league teams.

He played his last major league baseball game in October 1970.

Cotton Nash's Personal Life

Cotton Nash and Julie Richey met while they were at the University of Kentucky. They got married in November 1964. They had three children together.

In 1993, Cotton Nash was honored for his sports achievements. He was inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame. He passed away on May 23, 2023, at the age of 80.
