Cotuí is a small community, also known as a barrio. It is located in the municipality of San Germán, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 749 people lived there. Cotuí is a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.

A Look Back: Cotuí's History
How Puerto Rico Joined the U.S.
Long ago, Puerto Rico was a territory of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, things changed. Spain and the United States signed an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have the same rights as a state.
Counting the People: Early Census Records
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government wanted to know how many people lived in Puerto Rico. They did a special count called a census. This first census showed that 811 people lived in the Cotuí barrio. Over the years, the population has changed. You can see how many people lived in Cotuí at different times in the table below.
