Coulter is a small community in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located in South Versailles Township. You can find it along the Youghiogheny River, about 14.3 miles (23 km) southeast of Pittsburgh.

Coulter is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's not a city or town with its own local government. In the past, it was also known as "Coulterville" or "Coultersville."

The Story of Coulter

The land where Coulter is today was first claimed by Eli Coulter in 1787. Later, in 1855, the land was officially given to Margaret Coulter. She then planned out a village in 1858.

Coal Mining Days

For many years, Coultersville was a village focused on coal mining. People worked hard in the local mines. However, by the early 1900s, the coal in these mines ran out. Because of this, the mines had to close down.

The Post Office

Coulter has its own post office, which uses the ZIP code 15028. This post office first opened in 1864 and was called "Duncan." In 1894, its name changed to "Coultersville." Then, in 1900, it was renamed "Coulters," which is what it's often called today.
