History of South Versailles
South Versailles Township was created a long time ago, on September 18, 1869. It was formed when the older Versailles Township was split into two parts: North Versailles and South Versailles.
A few years later, in 1875, a part of South Versailles separated to form a new Versailles Township. This left South Versailles as a smaller area. It included the villages of Coulter, Osceola (also called Emblem), and Alpsville. These villages were once busy places where people mined coal from about 1850 until 1910. After the coal ran out, the villages of Alpsville and Osceola disappeared.
