A count is a special title given to a nobleman in many European countries. It's similar to the title of an earl in the United Kingdom. The wife of a count is called a countess.
What is a Count?
The word count comes from the French word comte. This word originally came from the Latin word comitas, which means "companion." In the past, a count was often a close friend or helper of an emperor.
During a time called feudalism, a count was a powerful ruler who managed a specific area of land. This area was known as a county.
