Where is Covert Township?
Covert Township is a land area of about 35 square miles (90.6 square kilometers). The US Census Bureau says that all of this area is land, with no large bodies of water inside its borders.
A Look at Covert's Past
Early Beginnings
Covert Township was once part of a larger area called Lafayette. Later, it became part of South Haven in 1837. In 1855, it was organized as its own area called Deerfield. Finally, in 1877, its name was officially changed to Covert.
A Place of Unity
From its very beginning in the 1860s, Covert, Michigan, was a special place. It was known for bringing people of different races together. Black and white students attended the same schools starting in the 1860s. This was quite unusual for the time.
People of color were also elected to important positions in the local government from 1868 onwards. This showed that the community valued everyone. The cemetery in Covert is also a symbol of this unity. It is the final resting place for both black and white soldiers who fought in the Civil War.

In the year 2000, there were 3,141 people living in Covert Township. These people lived in 1,118 households. A household is a group of people living together in one home. Most of these households (763) were families.
The people living in Covert Township come from many different backgrounds. In 2000, about half of the residents were White, and more than a third were African American. There were also people who identified as Native American, Asian, or from two or more races. A good number of residents were also of Hispanic or Latino heritage.
