Cracker facts for kids
A cracker is a thin, crispy, and usually flat piece of baked bread. Crackers are often eaten as a quick snack. You can enjoy them plain, or you can add different things on top, which are called toppings. Some popular toppings include cheese, peanut butter, or thin slices of meat. Crackers are also sometimes crumbled into soup to add a bit of crunch.
History of Crackers
The story of crackers in the United States began in 1792. A man named Theodore Pearson, from Newburyport, Massachusetts, created a special kind of bread. This bread was very much like the crackers we eat today. It was made simply from water and flour. Pearson called his creation "Pearson's Pilot Bread."
Pearson's bakery was the very first place in the United States to make crackers. His bakery continued to produce these cracker-like breads for over 100 years. This early form of cracker was popular, especially for sailors, because it stayed fresh for a long time.
