Craig Bartlett's Career Journey
Craig Bartlett started his career after college. He learned about stop-motion animation at Will Vinton Studios. This is a special way of making movies where objects are moved slightly between each photo. He worked on films like The Adventures of Mark Twain.
In 1987, Craig moved to Los Angeles. There, he animated the "Penny" claymation parts for Pee-wee's Playhouse. He also created an animated advertisement for NBC.
Working on Special Projects
Craig also directed projects for BRC Imagination Arts. These included "Postcards" and "Mystery Lodge" at Knott's Berry Farm. He even animated the music video for "Jurassic Park" by "Weird Al" Yankovic. This video came out in 1993.
Creating Hey Arnold!
Craig met executives from Nickelodeon while working on Rugrats. He shared his idea for Hey Arnold! with them in 1993. A pilot episode was made the next year. The show officially started production in 1995.
Hey Arnold! was made by Craig's own company, Snee-Oosh, Inc., which he started in 1986. The series ran for many years. It ended with a TV movie called Arnold Saves the Neighborhood. Nickelodeon later released it in theaters as Hey Arnold!: The Movie in June 2002.
After a disagreement about a second Arnold movie, Craig left Nickelodeon. He then created an animated TV movie for Cartoon Network called Party Wagon. This story was originally planned to be a new series.
In 2002, Craig also wrote a book based on the first Hey Arnold! movie. He wrote it with Maggie Groening.
Projects with NASA and Jim Henson
In 2005, Craig returned to BRC. He worked on a special attraction for NASA's Kennedy Space Center. It was called the Shuttle Launch Experience. For this project, Craig interviewed 26 astronauts. He wanted to learn about their experiences going into space. One of the astronauts he spoke with was Charles F. Bolden Jr..
Later, Craig joined The Jim Henson Company. He helped write the animated film Unstable Fables: 3 Pigs and a Baby. He also worked as a story editor for the PBS Kids show Sid the Science Kid.
New Shows for PBS Kids
In September 2008, PBS Kids picked up a new show created by Craig. It was called Dinosaur Train. This show, produced by The Jim Henson Company, first aired on September 7, 2009. It was Craig's first new show since Hey Arnold!.
In April 2015, another show by Craig was picked up by PBS Kids. This was Ready Jet Go! (originally named Jet Propulsion). It premiered on February 15, 2016. It was produced by Wind Dancer Films and his company, Snee-Oosh, Inc.
In November 2015, it was announced that Craig would return to Nickelodeon. He went back to write Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie. This movie premiered on November 24, 2017.
