Craig Washington's Political Career
Starting in Texas Politics
In 1972, Texas changed how it elected state lawmakers. For the first time, people voted for one person per area, called a single-member district. Craig Washington was one of five minority candidates. They were known as the "People's Five." They ran for seats in the Texas House of Representatives.
Washington won his election. He represented District 86 in the Texas House. He served there from 1973 to 1982. After that, he moved to the Texas State Senate. He represented District 13 from 1983 to 1989.
Serving in the U.S. Congress
In 1989, Craig Washington was elected to the United States House of Representatives. This was a special election. He filled the spot left by Mickey Leland, who had passed away. Washington represented Texas's 18th congressional district.
He was re-elected two more times. He served in Congress from December 9, 1989, to January 3, 1995. While in Congress, he sometimes voted against big projects. This included things like the International Space Station. He did this even if the project might have helped his home district.
In 1994, Washington ran for re-election. He lost in the Democratic primary election. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Houston City Councilwoman, won the primary. She then won the main election. She held the seat until her death in 2024.
Life After Congress
After leaving Congress, Craig Washington continued his career. He has been working as a lawyer. He practices law in both Houston and Bastrop, Texas.
