Scientific classification

Craugastor alfredi is a type of frog that lives in Guatemala and Mexico. It belongs to a family of frogs called Craugastoridae. This frog was first described by a scientist named George Albert Boulenger in 1898.

Where Does This Frog Live?

This frog's natural home is in warm, wet forests that are not too high up. These forests are found in low-lying areas where it rains a lot.

Why Caves Are Special Homes

Many Craugastor alfredi frogs like to live near the entrances of caves. This is because caves offer a good supply of food. They can find orthopterans, which are insects like crickets and grasshoppers, and other tasty bugs there.

What Does This Frog Look Like?

Craugastor alfredi has some unique features.

  • It has special "digital pads" on its two outer fingers. These pads look like they are cut off or flattened at the end.
  • Its fifth toe on each foot is longer than its third toe. This helps it move around in its forest home.

Family and Relatives

Recently, scientists found a new type of Craugastor frog in Honduras. This new frog is a subspecies of Craugastor alfredi and is called Craugastor cyanochthebius. This shows how diverse and interesting the frog family is!

Protecting This Frog

Sadly, Craugastor alfredi is facing a challenge. Its home is being lost because of habitat loss. This means that the forests where it lives are being cut down or changed. Protecting these forests is important to help these frogs survive.
