Eleutherodactylus obesus (Barbour, 1928) |
The Craugastor obesus is a special type of frog. It belongs to a family of frogs called Craugastoridae. This frog lives in the warm, wet areas of Central America. You can find it on the Caribbean side of southeastern Costa Rica and western Panama.
About This Frog
This frog loves places that are very wet and green. Its natural habitats include moist lowland forests and wet rainforests found in the mountains. It often lives near fast-flowing streams. You might spot it on rocks, big stones, or even cliff faces right in the middle of a stream's misty spray zone. This means it likes to be where the water splashes a lot!
Why It's Rare
The Craugastor obesus is a very rare frog. In Costa Rica, people last saw this frog in 1984. That was a long time ago! Scientists have looked for it in Panama too, but they haven't found any new ones recently. Even though it's hard to find, scientists don't think it's completely possibly extinct yet. They just need to do more searching.
The biggest danger to this frog is a disease called chytridiomycosis. This is a serious fungal disease that affects many amphibians, including frogs. It can make them very sick and even cause them to die. This disease is a major reason why many frog species around the world are becoming rare or disappearing.
