Scientific classification

The Craugastor omoaensis is a type of frog that belongs to the family Craugastoridae. This special frog is found only in Honduras, a country in Central America. It is one of 13 kinds of amphibians and reptiles that live nowhere else but in the Sierra de Omoa mountains. Scientists have only studied 24 of these frogs, making them very rare. These frogs usually live in wet, cool montane forests (mountain forests) near rivers, including rivers that sometimes dry up.

Why This Frog Is in Trouble

The Craugastor omoaensis frog is in serious danger. In 2004, a group called the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) looked at the frog's situation. They put it on their Red List as "Critically Endangered." This means the frog was facing an extremely high risk of disappearing forever.

What Happened to the Frogs?

Since 1996, almost all of these frogs have vanished. Scientists believe two main things caused this. One big problem is habitat loss. This means the places where the frogs live, like their mountain forests and rivers, are being destroyed or changed.

Another major cause is a disease called chytridiomycosis. This is a serious fungal disease that affects amphibians like frogs. It spreads easily and can kill many frogs very quickly.

Is the Frog Extinct?

By 2004, the area where these frogs lived was only about 100 square kilometers (about 38 square miles). Because so few frogs have been seen, it is possible that the Craugastor omoaensis frog is now extinct. This means there might be no more of them left in the world.
