History of Crawfordsville
Crawfordsville was started in 1870 by two people, Philemon Vawter Crawford and Robert Glass. It was built on land owned by Philemon Crawford. When the local post office opened in 1870, it was named after Crawford.
Philemon Crawford was born in Madison, Indiana, in 1814. He traveled to Oregon in 1851 using the famous Oregon Trail. His son, Jasper V. Crawford, became the first postmaster for the community. Before this, Philemon Crawford had also helped create the Boston Flour Mill near Shedd.
In 1915, Crawfordsville had around 300 residents. It was a busy place with two sawmills (for cutting wood) and a flouring mill (for grinding grain). The community also had a high school, an elementary school, and three churches.
In the early 1900s, some Sikh people from Pakistan and India came to live in Crawfordsville. They worked at the Calapooya Lumber Company, helping with the timber industry.
