Crean Glacier is a long river of ice located on the island of South Georgia. This amazing glacier stretches about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) across the land. It flows from the tall Wilckens Peaks down to Antarctic Bay on the island's northern coast.

Crean Glacier: A Frozen River in South Georgia
Crean Glacier is found on South Georgia, a remote island in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It's like a giant, slow-moving river made of ice. The glacier is about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) long. It starts high up in the Wilckens Peaks mountains. From there, it slowly moves northwest. It ends at a place called Antarctic Bay on the north side of the island.
How Crean Glacier Got Its Name
This glacier was named after a brave explorer named Tom Crean. He was an Irishman who joined many important trips to the Antarctic. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee officially named the glacier in his honor. This happened after the area was carefully mapped between 1951 and 1957.
Tom Crean's Amazing Journey
Tom Crean was a key member of Sir Ernest Shackleton's British expedition. This famous trip, called the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, took place from 1914 to 1916. Crean was the Second Officer on the ship Endurance.
During this expedition, the Endurance ship became trapped and crushed by ice. Shackleton and his crew had to escape. Tom Crean was one of the few men who went with Shackleton on an incredible journey. They sailed a small boat called the James Caird for a very long distance. They traveled from Elephant Island to King Haakon Bay on South Georgia.
After landing, Crean, Shackleton, and another explorer named Frank Worsley made a difficult trip. They walked across the mountains and glaciers of South Georgia. They were trying to reach a whaling station at Stromness to get help. Crean Glacier lies right on the path they took during this heroic overland crossing. Naming the glacier after Tom Crean remembers his courage and strength on this historic journey.
