Creating Opportunities (CREO) is a political party in Ecuador. Its name in Spanish is Creando Oportunidades, and 'CREO' also means 'I believe' or 'I create'. It is known as a centre-right party. This means it generally supports ideas like less government involvement in the economy and more individual freedom. In the 2021 election, the party's leader, Guillermo Lasso, was elected as the president of Ecuador.

What CREO Believes In

CREO is generally seen as a centre-right party. This means they often support ideas that give more power to individuals and businesses, rather than the government.

Economic Ideas

The party believes in a market economy, where businesses and individuals make most of the decisions about what to produce and sell. They also support entrepreneurship, which means helping people start their own businesses. However, they also promise to help small businesses and improve education.

Freedom and Justice

CREO believes in a fair justice system that works independently, without being controlled by politicians. They also strongly support free speech, which means people should be able to express their opinions freely.

CREO's Journey and Elections

CREO was founded in 2012. Since then, it has become an important political group in Ecuador.

Early Elections

In the 2013 presidential election, Guillermo Lasso, the party's founder, came in second place. CREO also won 11 out of 137 seats in the National Assembly, which is like Ecuador's parliament. This made them a main opposition group.

In the 2014 local elections, CREO had more success. They won 22 mayoral positions in different cities.

Working with Other Groups

CREO has often worked with other political groups. In 2014, they helped create "Ecuador Compromise." This group brought together different opposition parties. They wanted to ask the public to vote on some changes to the country's constitution.

In 2016, CREO joined the Union of Latin American Parties. This is a group of similar parties from across Latin America. For the 2017 elections, CREO teamed up with the SUMA party. They formed an "Alliance for Change" to run against the ruling party.

Guillermo Lasso Becomes President

Guillermo Lasso ran for president again in the 2021 election. After a close first round, he made it to the second round. He then faced Andrés Arauz. Lasso won the election in April 2021. Many people saw his victory as a sign that Ecuador was moving towards more free-market ideas.

On May 24, 2021, Guillermo Lasso became the new President of Ecuador. He was the first right-wing leader in the country in 14 years.
