What CREO Believes In
CREO is generally seen as a party with centre-right to right-wing views. When Guillermo Lasso ran for president in 2021, he focused on ideas that were a bit more in the middle.
- Economy: The party supports a market economy, which means businesses and people have a lot of freedom to buy and sell. They also like to help new businesses get started. However, they also promised to support very small businesses and improve schools.
- Freedom: CREO believes in a fair court system that is separate from the government. They also strongly support free speech, which means people should be able to say what they think without fear.
CREO's Journey and Elections
CREO has been an important part of Ecuadorian politics for many years.
Early Elections
In the 2013 presidential election, Guillermo Lasso came in second place. He received about 22.7% of the votes. In the same election, CREO won 11 out of 137 seats in the National Assembly. This made them a main opposition group in the parliament.
In 2014, during local elections, CREO won 22 mayoral positions. They also won control of the Loja province. That same year, CREO helped create a group called "Ecuador Compromise." This group brought together different opposition parties. They wanted to stop some changes to the country's constitution.
Forming Alliances
For the 2017 general elections, CREO teamed up with the SUMA Party. They formed an alliance called "Alliance for Change." Their main goal was to oppose the government at that time.
Guillermo Lasso's Presidency
Guillermo Lasso ran for president again in the 2021 general election. In the first round, he was slightly behind another candidate. But he managed to get enough votes to secure second place. This meant he would face Andrés Arauz in the final round.
Lasso won the election in April 2021. Many news reports said this showed a shift in how Ecuadorians were voting. Lasso's win was also seen as a victory for those who support free markets in the country. On May 24, 2021, Guillermo Lasso became the new President of Ecuador. He was the first right-wing leader in the country in 14 years.
